The Tide® global radio ministry is celebrating its 70-year anniversary! Seven decades ago, The Tide ministry began in one small town, but today reaches millions with radio programming worldwide.
The Tide ministry, now looking back on 70 years, broadcasts the Gospel of Jesus Christ through radio programming in 23 languages around the world, bringing the truth and hope of the Savior to people in in Zimbabwe, India, Nigeria, Nepal, Bhutan, Albania and Kosovo—in the languages they were born to speak.
“The Tide ministry has exciting, new initiatives planned for 2016,” reports The Tide Director Don Shenk. “These include new broadcasting in Thailand, a new studio in Zimbabwe and more. The Tide mission trips also give unique, memorable and life-changing opportunities to our friends and supporters. Our efforts will reach thousands of people in remote villages, many of whom have never heard about Jesus Christ and His love for all. We are praying for great fruits for His Kingdom this year!”
The Tide ministry began in 1946 as a 30-minute local radio broadcast in Chambersburg, Pa., known as “The Gospel Tide Hour.” Founded by the Rev. Charlie Byers, pastor of a church in Chambersburg, the initial mission of “The Gospel Tide Hour” was to reach the Chambersburg community for Christ. Within a few years, the success of the program opened doors to expand into other communities in North America, and by 1963 it had grown into an independent ministry incorporated as the Gospel Tide Broadcasting Association.
In 1975, the ministry became international when it began airing across Southern Africa through short wave radio transmission. This expansion initiated a gradual shift in emphasis from domestic radio programming to a strong emphasis on global missions. In 1978, the Gospel Tide Broadcasting Association began producing programs in other languages in both Africa and India, using indigenous speakers to share the Gospel message in their own language. By the time Charlie Byers passed away in 1996, The Tide ministry was involved in the production and airing of Gospel radio programming in nine languages, and by 2009 that number had grown to 13.
To mark 70 impactful years, The Tide ministry is planning a 70th Anniversary Celebration Dinner at 1 p.m. Oct. 16 at Whispering Pines of Carlisle at 1538 McClures Gap Road in Carlisle, Pa.
