What better way to celebrate a milestone birthday than with cake and ice cream with hundreds of your closest friends?
On Aug. 11, The Tide® global radio ministry will welcome friends and partners, as well as the community, to a 70th anniversary come and go Cake & Ice Cream Social from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Roxbury Holiness Camp, 13763 Cumberland Highway in Orrstown, Pa.
The day is significant for The Tide ministry, as it is the 70th anniversary of the day The Tide founder Charlie Byers first stood at a microphone in the broadcast room of WCHA radio station in Chambersburg, PA and aired his first Gospel radio program in 1946.
“Not only is August 11 a special day for The Tide ministry, Roxbury Holiness Camp is also a special location,” said The Tide Director Don Shenk. “For many years, our founder Charlie Byers was also the director of the annual holiness camp meeting, and in the early years on Sunday during camp, the camp PA system would be tuned in to the program at 7 o’clock in the morning so campers could listen through the camp’s loudspeaker system to Charlie preaching the word of God on the radio. Never could any of us guess that Charlie’s first broadcast would eventually grow to reach thousands of people across three continents in 23 languages. But God knew!”
The Tide ministry hopes to welcome 1,000 or more to the birthday event.
Then on Oct. 16, The Tide’s 70th Anniversary Celebration Dinner will kick off at 1 p.m. at Whispering Pines of Carlisle, 1538 McClures Gap Road in Carlisle, Pa. The afternoon will include lunch, a special speaker, a look back at The Tide’s history and music, and a report and vision from the current director.
